Tips for a stress-free perfect Thanksgiving:

1. Find out as soon as you can how you are spending Thanksgiving. If you are entertaining, make sure you have guest numbers, arrival times, food preferences etc as soon as possible.

2. Plan, plan and plan some more. A shopping list that you carry around either on paper or in some digital form will help enormously. You can add to this as and when you remember what you get. I find it helpful to have a list saved on the computer and I then put a note in diary for a couple of weeks before next year's Thanksgiving reminding me where the list for the previous year is stored on the computer, and use that as a starting point. There is no point in reinventing the wheel every year. Do the same with your favorite Thanksgiving recipes.

3. Order turkey and anything else that you need to reserve as soon as you can, then you can relax in the knowledge that you will not be making last minute changes to the menu because of missing ingredients.

4. Find good Thanksgiving recipes and go through them, noting all the ingredients you need. Do not forget side dishes, accompaniments and sauces.

5. Check you have suitable containers, serving dishes and enough place settings for the number of guest.

6. Plan what you and your guests are to drink and order up. Chill drinks well ahead of time. Make plenty of ice.

7. Write a count-down list for the few days before Thanksgiving, with clearly-defined tasks for each day. This will help you make sure everything gets done when they need to be done.

8. If you guests are willing, ask them to help by bringing drinks, sidedishes and desserts. Be specific about what you want them to bring and how much. Make sure you have space in your refrigerator for everything.

9. Set the scene ahead of time. If you house is large enough to allow you to do this, try and set up "Thanksgiving corner" where you gather up all the ornaments and special items that you will use on the day.

10. When all is done, relax and enjoy.
