How I built this website

Hi my name is Helma and I'd like to share with you how this website was conceived and built.

I was born into a family of food lovers in Hong Kong, a city where the food is as varied and cosmopolitan as the people. Father was in the restaurant business and always took the time to educate our taste buds. Travelling in Asia, North America and Europe and settling down in England have intensified my interest in people and their food.


A different life path

I was lucky enough to be able to take a break from my law career in the City of London to bring up my children. From a very early age, they have shown clear favourites and preferences in what they eat, just as most children do. We try to make meal time a sociable and enjoyable experience and everyone’s encouraged to freely exchange views on what they eat. The emphasis is always on taste, nutrition and variety.

My younger son is enthusiastic about quite a few of the things I cook and suggested, repeatedly, that I should write a cookbook. Though I was flattered by his enthusiasm, the idea of writing about food never took proper shape until I stumbled upon the idea of putting our recipes on a website. I like the idea that people from all over the world can share the recipes we love so much, without having to buy a book. Also, I add to our recipes stock as and when new ones are developed. When the children grow up, they will be able to look up some of their favourite childhood dishes wherever they may be in the world. Numerous friends and relatives have contributed to the site which, in turn, means that their friends and family will also have a point of reference for their favourite recipes.

The web-building system that has made all this possible is called Site Build It! or SBI for short.

I am guessing that you are visiting my site because you are looking for recipes for specific dishes, or inspirations to cook something new. How this website earns an income

This website primarily earns an income through advertising and affiliate programs. You will see the Google ads scattered around the site. Google Adsense and similar programs are great because they work for information sites like mine that do not have a product or service to sell.

Affiliate income comes from promoting other people's products, and each time a sale is made, I receive a percentage of that sale.

My site earns an income because people online are searching for information and my website provides lots of quality information. It is well-ranked by the search engines bringing me lots of FREE targeted traffic. My site ranks within the TOP 1 PERCENT of all websites by Alexa (see right), out of over an estimated over 230,000,000 websites in the world (according to an October 2009 netcraft.com survey).

The process

To start with, with no prior web building experience, I probably spent 15 hours a week learning to put the site together and writing the first batch of recipes. These days, I spend roughly 2-5 hours a week working on this site, plus time developing and testing more recipes.

So yes, building websites requires some upfront time investment, but they will then pay you for years to come. It is just a matter of consistently working on it. When you write about something that interests you, it is really more like fun than work.

Determination and perseverance are your two most important attributes. No, not web expertise, or any kind of computer, technical or writing skills.

Just the knowledge that you have a subject that you are passionate about and will stick with. SBI will even help you to refine the idea that you have for your website and help you select something that you know will be profitable.

So yes, there is some learning, and thinking, and decision-making involved, just like for any business, but SBI are there to guide you every step of the way.
