Apple crumble

apple crumble

For this apple crumble, you will need:

Crumble topping:

8oz wholewheat flour
3oz cold butter, cut into cubes
4oz soft brown sugar

Fruit filling:

4 large bramley cooking apples, peeled and cut into medium chunks
1oz soft brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
2 tbsp water

To serve:

1 pint warm custard

(serves 4) Using your fingers, mix the flour, sugar and butter together in a large bowl to form crumbs, handling the butter as little as possible to minimise melting.

Part cook the apples in a saucepan with the water for about 5 minutes. Do not allow the apple to go soft. Drain. Transfer to a buttered oven proof dish and sprinkle the white sugar, ground cloves and cinnamon on top.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the top and bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) for 40 minutes, then leave to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving with warm custard.
