Desserts recipes and cakes recipes
We are proud of our extensive collection of desserts recipes, including many traditional and contemporary desserts recipes.
When my parents first met my husband's parents, their future good relations were sealed over my mother-in-law's devine
strawberry pavlova.
Unlike the hard shop bought variety, the meringue in this pavlova is crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
My sister, a food technology teacher, is acknowledged to be the "dessert chef" of the family. Here, you will find recipes for her
creme brulee
and
chocolate roulade
with strawberries.
The
tarte-tatin
is one of the most well-known French dessert recipes. I used to think must be really difficult to make. One of our friends always used to bring one round when they came to visit (you know who you are). She is now expecting twins and is unlikely to have time to make desserts for some time, so I figured it was time I worked out how this lovely dessert is made. I was amazed at how easy it was. Just make sure you have a shallow pan that is both hob and oven-safe before you start and you cannot go wrong.
Another great apple dessert which has been the mainstay of English school menus is the traditional
apple crumble
. This is a very versatile recipe which can be used with any other fruit that may be in season, such as apricot, peaches, plums or pear. Rhubarbs are also favoured by many.
Equally popular is our
rice pudding
recipe. Here it is made with strawberry preserve, but you can experiment with any soft fresh fruit such as peaches or nectarine.
Our
blueberry pie
is a good way to pack lots of healthy anti-oxidants into a delicious dessert.
When strawberries are in season, if you want to do a little more than just pour cream onto them, try making
strawberry and cream pancakes
for a slightly more filling dessert. This will also make a few strawberries go a long way.
One of the most truly delicious Italian dessert recipes is the
tiramisu
. It is made with the magical combination of coffee liquer and mascarpone.
Anyone for
apple pie
? This recipe is based on one given to me by my mother-in-law. It is nearly as good as hers...
The secret to our
very berry very easy trifle
is the use of the best fruit, white chocolate, dessert wine and custard you can find. After that, there is no cooking involved and it is a simple case of putting it altogether.
Equally little cooking is required in our
ambrosia fruit salad
which is not for the faint-hearted or calorie-conscious. As they say, a little of what you love...
Now this
banana cake
recipe is one that everyone keeps asking for. If you think you cannot bake, think again. This is very, very easy and a very good way of using up over-ripe bananas.
For a slight variation of the banana cake, try our
moist banana bread
.
Reputedly one of Queen Victoria's personal teatime favourites, the
Victoria sponge
is one of simplest and most delicious cakes, made up of jam, and sometimes, cream, sandwiched between two light layers of sponge cake.
I love moist
coffee cake
but can't always find good ones in the shops. So here's a recipe you can use at home with your favourite make of coffee granules, with no special flavouring required.
There's not much that a large piece of our
best ever chocolate cake
can't make better. Remember though, that your cake is only as good as the chocolate you use, so do experiment and use the best you can find.
One of best chocolate dessert recipes is the one for our
chocolate mousse
. It is a good, reliable dessert to prepare for dinner parties.
Out of the many low-fat desserts recipes, one of the lightest and nicest is the one for
angel food cake
. It is almost fat-free, being made almost entirely with eggs whites, sugar and no butter.
Fancy something traditional and very, very simple? Try some
bread pudding
. It's good warm or cold.
One of my all-time favourite breakfasts which also doubles up as a quick snack or dessert is my mother's
french-toast
. There seems to be quite a few versions of this around the world. I hear that in the Czech Republic, this is often eaten as a savoury dish, with cheese, pickles and other toppings.
